Traci's Top Ten of 2019: Cover Re-Design!

In September of this year I started a project on instagram called OLD BOOKS NEW LOOKS where I create new book covers for older publications. Covers of covers, if you will! It's been a lot of fun to re-cover a bunch of old favorites. But seeing as the year's coming to a close and I am literally assigned by Brazos to create a 2019 retrospective top ten list, I decided I'd mash the assignments together and create a limited edition series: NEW BOOKS NEW LOOKS! So here they are-- my favorite books of 2019 and the new cover art I created for each title. Original artwork featured on the left, with my new alternative design on the right. Enjoy!

SEVEN SAMURAI SWEPT AWAY IN A RIVER by Jung Young Moon

A Texas story that is really a waking dreamscape of minutia musings, wherein may lie the deeply nestled consciousness of the Lone Star State. Delightfully digressive. “Comedic Zen.”

THE YELLOW HOUSE by Sarah M. Broom

National Book Award Winner for Non-Fiction! A memoir that is a map of what "home" means. A triumph of form in that Broom creates a whole new style of memoir. The Sarah Broom author event at Project Row Houses was one of my favorite of the year-- a powerful community conversation with an elegant and deeply thoughtful writer.

TEARS OF THE TRUFFLEPIG by Fernando A. Flores

Trufflepig is pure, psychedelic, Tex-Mex mythos. Flores wrote the novel in a three month fever dream, hammered out on a mechanical typewriter in late 2014. Five years later, Flores’ parallel universe contains insight on the border that reads eerily prophetic. Listen to the 9-song Spotify playlist that accompanies the novel! (Search “Tears of the Trufflepig” on Spotify!)

ON EARTH WE'RE BRIEFLY GORGEOUS by Ocean Vuong

A poetic masterpiece of fiction. A love letter to an immigrant mother. A queer coming of age story. And so much more. I can't reccommend this book enough. Simply stunning. Ocean Vuong is a national treasure.

TIME IS THE THING A BODY MOVES THROUGH by T. Fleischmann

A stunning exploratory essay on bodies, art, and their intersection. These words are a sun streaked morning that finds you waking with your head at the foot of the bed-- or a map of what it means to become ourselves. Fleischmann's fluidity in prose gently disassembles our constructs of language, love, and gender. Essential reading for queer makers of any medium.

THE FUTURE OF ANOTHER TIMELINE by Annalee Newitz

Queer, riot grrl, time-traveling science fiction! Intelligent and profound.

THE FAGGOTS AND THIER FRIENDS BETWEEN REVOLUTIONS by Larry Mitchell, illustrated by Ned Astra

The big gay, re-relase of this 1970s queer utopia text is filled with bite sized bits of advice, poems and words of inspiration for the gays, by the gays, and its beautifully illustrated! Your (not so) new queer mantra is waiting in these pages!

HONEY, I KILLED THE CATS by Dorota Maslowska, translated from the Polish by Benjamin Paloff

A grossly, all-too-accurate satire of American consumer culture and those frantically swiping their plastic (in hopes of some kind of meaning) inside of it. Hilarious and biting! A scream!

GENDER AND OUR BRAINS by Gina Rippon

Debunk your antiquated concepts of gender with this smart, funny, and essential book! A breakthrough work in neuroscience!

THE PAPER WASP by Lauren Acampora

Deliciously disturbing, surreal, and stunning. The narrator Abby is simultaneously horrifying and relatable, slithering through mania, seclusion, obsession, and manipulation toward her inevitable destiny. This narrative is a stylistic and artistic marvel-- it shimmers in its own peculiar darkness. Perfectly twisted!
