Summer Staff Picks: STAYCATION READS!

Summer is in full swing here in the Bayou City, so we've put together a list of SUMMER STAFF PICKS to keep you well-read and your imagination well-fed for the summer season! With temperatures in the mid-90's that feel like the low 100's, we should all enjoy a little time with our home AC's and these STAYCATION READS!

MARK'S  PICKFunny and smart. I'm all about the laughs this summer. But not the low hanging fruit. I want literary laughs, stories that bend and twist and challenge my sense of humor, not simply humor for humor's sake. These three recent novels easily fulfill my criteria. Innovative, literary, but unafraid to be funny too; these are fantastic books that will make you laugh and think. RIOTS I HAVE KNOWN by Ryan Chapman: A high-wire act of a small novel, this utterly brilliant, satiric and singular novel takes place in real time during a prison riot. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but it's bumming with great writing, invention and a heartfelt look at social media, criminal injustice and humanity.

LAURA G'S PICK: POND by Claire-Louise Bennett: "A complete and utter escape, Pond is contemplative, rich, and an absolute delight – pure aesthetic pleasure."

CASSIE'S PICK: RED, WHITE, AND ROYAL BLUE by Casey McQuiston: “History, huh?” This unapologetically queer escapist political rom-com is EVERYTHING I didn’t know I needed. This alternate universe where the first female president’s son, Alex, falls in love with his assumed rival, the Prince of Wales, is perfect. It has some of my favorite rom-com tropes (animal shenanigans, fake dating, enemies-to-lovers, a gratuitous karaoke moment) without shying away from politics. There’s a gerrymandering sub-plot! And lots of Texas talk. You will not regret reading this book.

LAURA M'S PICK: MAGIC FOR LIARS by Sarah Gailey: This book follows Ivy Gamble, a down-on-her-luck P.I. who sets out to investigate a murder at...wait for it... a wizarding school! There she comes face to face with sulky teenage mages, dangerous theoretical magic, and her own magically gifted, aloof sister. With twists, turns, and plenty of jabs at Harry Potter, this book is the perfect antidote for reality.

JOY'S PICK: I LIKE TO WATCH: ARGUING MY WAY THROUGH THE TELEVISION REVOLUTION by Emily Nussbaum: Funny, fresh, and deeply incisive, this collection of essays from Pulitzer Prize winning cultural critic Nussbaum will add some delicious food for thought to your summer. She opens with her essay on how my personal fan-girl favorite, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, turned her into a TV critic, then digs into the intersection between television and culture, covering everything from reality TV to Sex and City and the Sopranos, to the legacy of Joan Rivers, to South Park, and how it is entirely possible that jokes won the 2016 presidential election. Brilliant, addictive stuff.

TRACI'S PICK: ALL THE THINGS I LOST IN THE FLOOD by Laurie Anderson: The godmother of multi-media curates a thoughtful and stunning retrospective of her vastly diverse body of work. Complete with photos, sketches, and notes on past projects, this book is gorgeous! The perfect compilation to peruse, belly down on a blanket, spread out across the living room floor while listening to your favorite Laurie Anderson album and enjoying a glass of wine on a warm summer night.

LYRIC'S PICK: GIOVANNI'S ROOM by James Baldwin: If your only option for travel right now is escaping to other places in your head, Baldwin's Paris is a great place to get carried off to.
