Summer Staff Picks: ROADTRIP READS!

The last days of summer are upon us! Probably a good time to take that roadtrip you've been talking about. Here are our Summer Staff Picks for BEST ROADTRIP READ! Happy adventuring!

LYRIC'S PICK: ELEANOR OR, THE REJECTION OF THE PROGRESS OF LOVE by Anna Moschovakis- Anna Moschovakis's protagonists are both restless in different ways, mirroring the constant movement of the car, bus, or plane you might find yourself in this summer!

TRACI'S PICK:  THE FAGGOTS AND THEIR FRIENDS BETWEEN REVOLUTIONS by Larry Mitchell, Illustrated by Ned Asta- I love a good long drive. If I’m the driver. But I often get headaches from reading for long periods of time in the car, which can be a real drag on a vehicular adventure. So if you’re both queer and prone to carsickness like me, then THE FAGGOTS AND THEIR FRIENDS BETWEEN REVOLUTIONS is your perfect Road Trip Read! This 1970s queer utopia text is filled with bite sized bits of advice, poems, and words of inspiration for the gays, by the gays, and it’s beautifully illustrated! So take it one mile and one queer anthem at a time! Rest your eyes as needed! Don’t forget the Advil and stay hydrated on the road!

MARK'S PICK: ORGANS OF SENSE by Adam Ehrlich Sachs- An absurd fable that is as strange as it is hilarious. The 1600's, a blind astronomer predicts a solar eclipse and the young philosopher Gottlieb Wilhelm Liebniz travels to meet the astronomer, Twisted and weird and brimming with dry wit, history and perfect comic timing, this is a wonderful introduction to a talented new voice.

JOY'S PICK: BLUE HIGHWAYS: A JOURNEY INTO AMERICA by William Least Heat-Moon- Once, when I was twenty-one, I drove from Vegas to Death Valley with a girlfriend in a rented red Camaro, guided only by a somewhat less than perfect map on the back of a placemat from the 24 hour restaurant in Circus Circus, where we were sobering up with the 3 am 99 cent all you can eat Silver Dollar Pancake special. This was, let me add, pre-cell phone and pre-GPS. Just two idiots road-tripping into the desert with only a syrup splotched paper placemat to guide us, driving by borax fields and sand dunes, government signs that said Keep Out, a house made of bottles and a castle some guy had dragged there piece by piece. We got back in time to drink our fill at the lobby champagne fountain happy hour at the Westward Ho (which has since been demolished). If this type of American road trip grabs you as it does me-- the back roads and the weird, giant ball of twine stuff you find while wandering the highways that aren’t the Interstates, stopping for meals at places like the Frontier on Central Avenue (aka Route 66) in Albuquerque, where you can order a cinnamon roll as big as your head, then you need William Least Heat-Moon’s 1980s classic, BLUE HIGHWAYS. Trust me on this.

LAURA G'S PICK: THE HUNDRED YEAR OLD MAN WHO CLIMBED OUT THE WINDOW AND DISAPPEARED by Jonas Jonasson- Allan Karlsson is a hilarious old geezer on an eccentric path through the 20th century. Basically if Forrest Gump drank vodka.

KEATON'S PICK: BLOOD ORCHID: AN UNNATURAL HISTORY OF AMERICA by Charles Bowden- Bowden was a take no prisoners or bullshit writer with an eye keenly attuned to the most unseemly sides of American society. This dark travelogue--the first part in a quartet--is the perfect accompaniment for travel in these troubled times. Great for fans of Henry Miller, Hunter Thompson, or Cormac.

KATIE'S PICK: BRAIDING SWEETGRASS by Robin Wall Kimmerer- Any road trip I've ever been on I stare out my window for hours noticing the natural elements around me trees, cactus, wildflowers blowing in the breeze. I zone everything out around me and focus on the the huge natural world around us. That's what I love most about BRAIDING SWEETGRASS it makes the reader notice nature and begin to ask questions about where we fit into the natural world and what that relationship can look like. Carry this in your backpack or stuff it into your suitcase, hold this book close.
