Summer Staff Picks: BEST BEACH READS!

The swampy summer continues! Escape the city with these Staff Summer Picks: BEST BEACH READS!

KEATON'S PICK: THE NICKEL BOYS by Colson Whitehead- This ripped-from-the-headlines potboiler follows up the Pulitzer and National Book Award-winning THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. A riveting and harrowing tale from one of our time's greatest writers. THE NICKEL BOYS is out July 16, and I can't wait.

LAURA G'S PICK: THESE REBEL WAVES by Sara Raasch- This book has a knock-out cast of diverse characters, a complex and layered world, and an ever increasing descent into chaos that left me breathless! Plus, the sequel is coming out this August!

LYRICS PICK: BLUETS by Maggie Nelson- If you're like me and you prefer to brood in the summer, you'll enjoy getting moody while reading BLUETS by the ocean.

KATIE'S PICK: SEA MONSTERS by Chloe Aridjis- Luisa has a strong head on her shoulders and penchant for more excitement and adventure in life, which is something we can all connect with. Running away with a boy she might like to find a troupe of missing Ukranian dwarfs, and planting herself on the "Beach of the Dead" in Oaxaca, which carries its own identity within the novel. Isolation and youthful obsessions permeate this mesmerizing novel. Dig your toes in the sand and get lost in this wonderfully introspective beach read.

CASSIE'S PICK: HOT DOG GIRL by Jennifer Dugan- Dugan starts with a relatable bisexual lead, wraps her in the aftermath of abandonment, and tops her with fake dating and scheming to make the most delectable summer treat. Dugan’s debut is a delight with emotional ups and downs to rival any amusement park coaster.

MARK'S PICK: Funny and smart. I'm all about the laughs this summer. But not the low hanging fruit. I want literary laughs, stories that bend and twist and challenge my sense of humor, not simply humor for humor's sake. These three recent novels easily fulfill my criteria. Innovative, literary, but unafraid to be funny too; these are fantastic books that will make you laugh and think. HOLD FAST YOUR CROWN by Yannick Haenel -A madman (who isn't really mad) (or maybe is) writes a screenplay about Herman Melville. This incredible novel is about Moby Dick and Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter, but it's not. It's really about art & failure & madness. About the white face of truth that flashes & disappears. A whirlwind narrative that's hilarious propolsive & infective. Do not sleep on this book, it's one of my favorites this year. Marvelously translated from the French by Teresa Fagan.

TRACI'S PICK: THE PAPER WASP by Lauren Acampora- Deliciously disturbing, surreal and stunning. The narrator Abby is simultaneously horrifying and relatable, slithering through seclusion, obsession, mania, and manipulation toward her inevitable destiny. This narrative is a stylistic and artistic marvel-- it shimmers in its own peculiar darkness. Set in sunny Los Angeles, California, it's a perfect artfully twisted pick for best beach read of the summer!

JOY'S PICK: MRS. EVERYTHING by Jennifer Weiner- Whether you’re at the beach, the pool, or just curled up on your couch with a summer cocktail or ice tea, Jennifer Weiner’s MRS. EVERYTHING is that perfect epic sprawl of a story to get lost in. I like my summer reads with a bit of meat on their bones, and this one does not disappoint in that regard, either. (Weiner is not afraid of avoiding pat, happy endings, to which I say bravo!) The novel is the story of the Kaufman sisters – Jo and Bethie (and yes their names are definitely an homage to Little Women), growing up in the 1950s and then ranging through life and most of all relationships – with each other, with their mother, with lovers—against the often tumultuous backdrop of the ensuing decades. This is classic ‘women’s fiction’ at its best—complex, layered, deeply personal, and delightfully readable.
