Jeffrey Yang's collection is based in the most curious of places, Marfa Texas, and delivers a multi-faceted look at the comings-and-goings of the town as well as its history. I went to Marfa this summer, experienced it for a few days, and I find that Yang represents the strangeness and disorientation of the town so well throughout the book. Vast and engrossing.

Denis Johnson's poetry background is apparent in his works of fiction. His prose is imagistic, punchy, and pretty wild. I love his eccentric characters and storylines because they always leave you somewhere you don't expect to find yourself. His vivid sentences will stick in your mind.

Stag's Leap is a tender and poignant collection mainly about the dissolution of Sharon Olds' marriage. She describes heartbreak and growth through tangible images, specific details, and a deep sensitivity to both her and her ex-husband's emotions. I greatly admire Olds' sensibility for rawness in all of her work, and this book is no different.
