Meet Sam

I read because I’m curious and I want to be surprised. I’m interested in how a character or person develops a subjective world based on their circumstances. I have cultivated an interest in mythology, symbols, and paradoxes by studying visual art. I like when a book can conjure images like a work of art, but also appreciate the elegance with which words can be used to describe the invisible aspects of life.

Ernst’s art is chaotic but serene, moving but eternal, ambiguous but
urgent. These contradictions are fitting for an artist who famously said
“a painter is lost when he finds himself.” Looking at Ernst’s
paintings, drawings, and sculptures can be a disorienting experience,
but also quite enjoyable. I regret that I’m not able to travel to Vienna
to experience this retrospective in person. However, looking through
this comprehensive and well designed book has certainly been the next
best thing.
