LOOKING TO THE FUTURE - Staff's Most Anticipated Fall Titles

Brazos is looking to the FUTURE...or at least to this fall! Here are our Staff Picks for Most Anticipated Titles for Fall 2019!

KEATON'S NON-FICTION PICK: BIG WONDERFUL THING: A HISTORY OF TEXAS by Stephen Harrigan- This is it! A gigantic, single volume history of the Lone Star State years in the making and poised to be the standard for years to come. Filled with images and tales of legendary and obscure Texans throughout time, this is a must have to pore over again and again.

KEATON'S FICTION PICK: OUT OF DARKNESS, SHINING LIGHT by Petina Gappah- Thrilling, beautiful and complex, Gappah's latest novel begins with the death of famed explorer/missionary Dr. David Livingstone and follows the journey of his unknown African servants/guides as they carry his body more than 1500 miles across the continent to send him and his papers home. A stunning saga of colonialism's beginnings that gives voice to these amazing people forgotten by Western history.

JOY'S PICK: THE GIVER OF STARS by Jojo Moyes- If you think you know Jojo Moyes (ME BEFORE YOU) then think again.  Set in Depression-era Kentucky, GIVER OF STARS is based on the true story of the Horseback Librarians, a group of intrepid women who skirted danger to bring  books to people in far-flung hollers and other rural areas as part of Eleanor Roosevelt's traveling library program. The novel is epic in scope, passionate, thrilling, and also funny, with an abundance of characters to root for, including tough as nails Margery O'Hare, whose opening scene will leave you breathless and embarking on deep dive research about the subject matter. I predict huge things for this one.

LYRIC'S PICK: THE UNDYING by Anne Boyer- An urgent study of illness, death, art, science, language and health.

CASSIE'S PICK: FULL DISCLOSURE by Camryn Garrett - A roller coaster of a debut that makes my thespian heart soar. When the book begins, Simone is expertly navigating life at her new high school - until a mysterious someone threatens to tell the whole school she's HIV-positive. This coming-of-age story features LGBTQ+ representation, the stress that comes with navigating new friendships and budding romance, and enough musical theater to get Rent stuck in your head for days to come. I am also STOKED for TARNISHED ARE THE STARS by Rosiee Thor- which is impressive because I haven't even read it yet! I am all here for queer disabled space rebellion!!

LAURA G'S PICK: SALT SLOW by Julia Armfield- Armfield is a visceral, gut-wrenching talent. She writes with the beauty of Daisy Johnson and the teeth of Carmen Maria Machado!

ÜLRIKA'S PICK: REINHARDT'S GARDEN by Mark Haber- It's dedicated to me!

MARK'S PICK: BARON WENCKHEIM'S HOMECOMING by Laszlo Krasznahorkai- Considered by many (including yours truly) to be one of the most challenging and unique authors alive, each novel by Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasznahorkai is an event. Hs long, sinuous sentences (which can often last pages) take patience but are equally rewarded. Dark, dense, and starkly funny, his newest novel focuses on a small, provincial Hungarian village and the long-awaited return of an enigmatic character. Teeming with the voices of the town, this is a big, hefty novel as generous as it is demanding.

TRACI'S PICK: HONEY, I KILLED THE CATS by Dorota Masłowska- A grossly, all-too-accurate satire of American consumer culture and those frantically swiping their plastic (in hopes of some kind of meaning) inside of it. Hilarious and biting. A scream.
