Karl Kilian: 1943 - 2020

It is with profound sadness that we learned Karl Kilian, the founder of Brazos Bookstore, passed away last night. Although Karl left the store many years ago, his presence has always been an integral part of who we are. In later years, Karl would still stop by to buy a book or watch from the counter as an author reading took place. We were always excited to see him and nothing was better than watching him smile or tell us how happy he was to see the bookstore thriving. Karl Kilian's vision is the same vision we try to carry on every day.

Besides founding the store, Karl's presence is felt in everything we do, from the books we choose to the events we host, to the photographs hung around the store. Karl's impact on the culture of Houston, literary and otherwise, can't be overstated. His relationships with the University of Houston Writing program to Inprint are still with us today.

Despite this great loss, we feel proud and fortunate to carry on his important legacy.
