Presenting Houston Reads: A Week of Spring Break Activities for the Whole Family!

The Brazos Treehouse presents a week of family-friendly fun at the bookstore! This Spring Break we’re exploring all the wonderful aspects of our literary city with Houston Reads! We’re bringing in people from all over Houston who make our city great to talk about the books they read and write and love.

Spring Break Houston Reads Kick Off

Saturday, March 9, 10:30 am

Houston author Crystal Allen will be reading Jacqueline Woodson’s picture book, The Day You Begin. Allen will also be autographing her young readers’ Mya Tibbs series.

Crystal Allen is the author of How Lamar's Bad Prank Won a Bubba-Sized Trophy, which received a Florida Sunshine State Award Master List nomination and was a Junior Library Guild selection. She is also the author of the acclaimed middle grade novels The Laura Line, The Magnificent Mya Tibbs: Spirit Week Showdown, and The Magnificent Mya Tibbs: The Wall of Fame Game. She currently lives in Sugar Land, Texas.

Brazos Hosts Keith O'Brien

Keith O'Brien, author of the New York Times bestseller Fly Girls, will be in-store for an event about his book -- both Adult and Young Reader editions. From NPR correspondent Keith O’ Brien comes this thrilling Young Readers' edition of the untold story about pioneering women, including Amelia Earhart, who fought to compete against men in the high-stakes national air races of the 1920s and 1930s—and won. Collaborative Book-Making Workshop with guest authors/illustrators Matthew Swanson & Robbi Behr: You Can Make A Book. And You Will.

Tuesday, March 12, 3 pm

Author/illustrator, husband/wife duo Matthew Swanson and Robbi Behr will briefly discuss the collaboration fundamentals that have led them to publish more than 75 books (including their critically acclaimed middle grade mystery/comedy series The Real McCoys) before leading participants through the process of collaboratively writing and illustrating a book. As hijinks and hilarity ensue, participants will witness (and harness) the irresistible power of working with others, while proving beyond doubt that every single one of us can write and draw. Everyone will take home a self-and-group-authored, unique, bizarre, and truly wonderful book. Ages 6 and up.

Evening family event with Matthew Swanson and Robbi Behr: The Real McCoys series

Matthew Swanson and Robbi Behr return for an evening event presenting their Real McCoys series. When someone kidnaps the beloved school mascot, Moxie McCoy is on the case! Bursting with interactive illustrations on every page, The Real McCoys delivers clever storytelling, laugh-out-loud humor, and heartwarming insight!

Houston Reads About Food

Houston is the most diverse city in the country, which rings true for our food, too! We’ve got foodies and restaurateurs left and right sharing their cuisines with Houstonians. Swing by the store for story time with the folks from local caffeine hot-spots, Antidote and Black Hole! We’ll also have the return of the crêpe station run by Brazos’ own Thu Doan.

It’s Space City here at Brazos! Touch down in the store on Thursday for an exciting story time that’s out of this world. We’ll have books to read on space and astronauts, as well as fun crafts for everyone.

Join us for an evening of poetry reading with guest readers from Houston’s arts organizations. Come on by and bring a favorite poem to read (yours or a favorite by another). Open to the public. Ages six and up.

Brazos Bookseller and Houston actress Cassie Schultz will present an interactive arts program in conjunction with Arts Alive!, a Houston organization dedicated to educating children and adults through the arts.

It’s the return of the Bellaire Nature Center! We are so excited to have them back in the store for their Bunny Buddies program. Join us for a storytime along with real, live bunnies. What kind of picture books to bunnies like? You’ll find out!
