Brazos Bookstore, based in Houston, Texas, proudly serves as one of the city's oldest independent bookstores. Locally owned by a small group of passionate community members, we provide a creative space that fuels the imaginations of authors, readers, and the Houston community, offering an array of contemporary and classic literature, non-fiction, YA, and children's books. In addition, we have a rich history of fostering a welcoming and vibrant environment that encourages free thought, lively discussions, and the spread of knowledge.

Expectations and Summary of Role
Brazos is seeking a General Manager who will oversee all operational aspects of the bookstore, ensuring the highest quality of service and products. This includes managing and developing staff, overseeing financials, handling inventory, producing events, interacting with our board of directors, and fostering partnerships within the Houston community.

At Brazos Bookstore, you'll meet and interact with critically acclaimed international and national authors, work closely with publishers, and have exclusive access to advance copies of upcoming titles. Plus, you'll be able to make your mark in Houston's thriving literary scene.


Job Requirements
▪ At least two years of bookstore experience and 2+ years of management experience, preferably in bookstore or publishing roles
▪ Typical work hours for this role are a 40-hour, in-person work week, with some additional time working during large in-store and off-site events and occasional evenings and weekends
▪ A college-level education or equivalent work experience is highly desirable
▪ Candidate should be passionate about literature, community engagement, and committed to continuing the legacy of Brazos as Houston's premier independent bookstore
▪ Must be an enthusiastic, positive team player capable of leading a team and stepping in to assist wherever necessary
▪ Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks concurrently
▪ Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and solid organization and time management skills
▪ Ability to create, interpret, and understand financial reporting spreadsheets
▪ Proficient level computer skills and professional knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
▪ Ability to handle confidential matters appropriately and with discretion
▪ Excellent written and verbal communication skills
▪ The candidate should be capable of lifting at least 30lbs and standing for extended periods
