Join us on Zoom for THE MOST FRAGILE OBJECTS. Featuring Alberto Chimal (author), George Henson (Alberto's translator), and Frank Garrett.

THE MOST FRAGILE OBJECTS, Chimal’s first novel published in translation, tells three stories (maybe two, or just one) of people living secret lives in early 21st-century Mexico. They seem to indulge in wanton sex and power fantasies. But is everything what it appears to be?

With a style that never resorts to titillation and a plot structure in which the factual and the dubious chase each other, THE MOST FRAGILE OBJECTS is an unusual, dark take on the themes of power, love, imagination, and freedom.

Alberto Chimal (Toluca, 1970) is one of Mexico’s most prolific authors. His work encompasses a variety of genres and forms, including the novel, short story, essay, experimental fiction, and children’s literature. He is also a sought-after clinician, lecturer, and teacher of creative writing. The recipient of numerous awards, his second novel, La torre y el jardín, was shortlisted in 2013 for the Rómulo Gallegos prize, one of the most prestigious in the Spanish language. His work has been translated into numerous languages.

George Henson is a literary translator and assistant professor of Spanish Translation at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. His translations include works by some of Latin America’s most important literary figures, including Cervantes Prize laureates Elena Poniatowska and Sergio Pitol, and have appeared in World Literature Today, Latin American Literature Today, The Guardian, Two Lines, and Granta. The Most Fragile Objects by Alberto Chimal is his seventh book.

Dallas-based writer and translator Frank Garrett holds a PhD in philosophy and literary theory. His work has been published by, among others, Black Sun Lit, Burning House Press, Duquesne UP, Spurl Editions, and Zeta Books, and has appeared in 3:AM Magazine, Transitions Online, and minor literature[s], where he serves as a contributing editor. Outpost19 published his translation of Robert Rient’s memoir Witness in 2016. Sublunary Editions will publish his translation of “Undula,” the long-lost literary debut of Bruno Schulz, in October 2020.
