“Gotch is equal parts moxie, glitter, and feelings—and she’s not afraid to talk about any of it.” —USA Today

Jen Gotch wants you to feel better. Whether developing bright, optimistic products as co-founder and chief creative officer of multimillion-dollar brand; advocating for mental health and self-care on the Jen Gotch Is Okay . . . Sometimes podcast; or sharing the ups and downs of her everyday life with more than 230 thousand Instagram followers (@jengotch), Jen is determined to destigmatize mental illness, deglamorize success, and help others feel a little bit less alone.

In THE UPSIDE OF BEING DOWN: How Mental Health Struggles Led to My Greatest Successes in Work and Life, Jen takes readers along on her winding, bumpy, but entirely-worth-it road to personal and professional happiness. At the intersection of #GIRLBOSS and Furiously Happy, this story of achievement, in spite of—and at times because of—mental health challenges, offers an empowering opportunity to rethink what success can and should look like.

From Jen’s childhood on, early signs of bipolar disorder, anxiety, and ADD went largely unrecognized. Living back at home after college, she became utterly convinced that her skin had turned green. Hallucinating something that no one else could see or understand was terrifying. But it led to Jen’s first diagnosis and a journey toward self-awareness and acceptance that would unfurl alongside her career path as a TV extra, prop stylist, art director, commercial photographer, and—eventually—accidental entrepreneur.

Insightful, funny, and unerringly authentic, Jen shares hard-won wisdom on topics including:

  • With one friend and zero business experience, growing a small hair accessories company into a beloved lifestyle brand that’s all about inspiring fun, eliciting joy, and championing mental health
  • Why it’s sometimes okay to cry at work, and the benefits of running a company that encourages emotion and operates as a group of humans rather than a corporate conglomerate
  • Busting the myth of constant busyness as a badge of honor, and why setting personal boundaries and delegating responsibility are more meaningful signs of success
  • Embracing optimism by learning to recognize negative thoughts, keep them in perspective, and work to control your reaction to them
  • The crucial roles of therapy, medication, and the Emotional Rating System she uses every day to assess and, when needed, address her mental and emotional well-being

Jen says in the introduction of THE UPSIDE OF BEING DOWN, “Writing this book has changed me.” The powerful message in these pages also encourages readers to change—daring them to live each day with hope, optimism, kindness, and humor, while defining their own vision of success.

JEN GOTCH is genetically predisposed to optimism. She’s a visionary, a creative powerhouse and an advocate for mental health and emotional well- being. Jen also feels she would make a great crime scene investigator if her  current career doesn’t work out. In 2008 she founded with a friend, and with no prior business experience, was able to transform it from a small hair accessories company into a beloved multimillion-dollar brand that’s all about encouraging joy and helping its community be their best. She remains as the chief creative officer and fearless leader of the team. She also uses her authentic voice on Instagram (238k followers/@jengotch) and her podcast Jen Gotch is Ok…Sometimes to deglamorize success, remove the stigmas associated with mental illness, and build emotional intelligence—all while working to help her audience feel less alone. Her memoir The Upside of Being Down will be published by Gallery Books in 2020.
