LEILA MOTTLEY is “a bold new voice in fiction” and a New York Times Writer to Watch (Associated Press). Her debut novel Nightcrawling is “a soul-searching portrait of survival and hope” (Oprah Winfrey) which she published at the age of 19. Named an Oprah’s Book Club Pick and a “Best Book of the Summer” by The Millions, LitHub, Stylist, and Elle, Nightcrawling tells the story of a young Black woman who falls victim to a sexual abuse scandal within the Oakland Police Department. Kiese Laymon calls the novel “the most compelling book written by an American teenager in my lifetime” and Ron Charles in The Washington Post writes, “Nightcrawling really is a powerful, poignant story worth your attention….My god – that voice. It’s sometimes too painful to keep reading, but always too urgent to stop.”

Mottley served as Oakland’s Youth Poet Laureate in 2018, and her poetry has appeared in The New York Times and Oprah Daily. According to The Guardian, Mottley writes with a “voice and vision you won’t easily get out of your head.” She is founder of Lift Every Voice, a youth-led art advocacy workshop series about youth incarceration. Mottley lives in Oakland and has performed at the Oakland Women’s March, the Oakland March for Our Lives, and City of Oakland Cultural Dialogue meetings.
