Inspired by Reva’s own childhood in Ukraine, GOOD CITIZENS NEED NOT FEAR chronicles the hilarious and heartbreaking lives of the residents of a single collapsing apartment building as they face unending bureaucratic riddles in the chaotic years before, during, and after the fall of the Soviet Union, painting a dynamic portrait of resistance, political upheaval, and survival at all costs. Situated firmly within the crosshairs of urban paranoia and electric surrealism, this collection is perfect for fans of the glorious darkness of Ottessa Moshfegh, the wry humor of George Saunders, the warm intensity and wit of David Benioff, and the dark absurdism of early Gary Shteyngart.

MARIA REVA was born in Ukraine and grew up in Canada. She holds an MFA from the Michener Center at the University of Texas. Her fiction has appeared in The AtlanticMcSweeney'sBest American Short StoriesGranta, and elsewhere, and has won a National Magazine Award. She also works as an opera librettist. Her musical collaborations include an opera libretto for ERATO Ensemble, texts for Vancouver International Song Institute’s Art Song Lab, and a script for City Opera Vancouver.
