DEMON COPPERHEAD contest results are in!

Well, we gave it our best shot, selling a fabulous 69 copies in the month of September, but we didn't win. The honor goes to Booktenders in Barboursville WV (which is near the setting for the book), who sold a whopping 250 copies. Congratulations to them and so many thank yous to everyone who supported Brazos in the contest by buying Demon Copperhead!  It's a wonderful book, so really everyone is a winner!

Barbara Kingsolver has announced that the independent bookstore that sells the most  hardcover copies of Demon Copperhead from September 1-30, 2023 will win the only author event with her in April, 2024, when the paperback edition of the novel is launched. We love this bold book and want to both host Barbara and get this book into as many Houston readers’ hands as possible. Buy Demon Copperhead from Brazos in the month of September and help us bring Barbara to Houston next spring!

Set in the mountains of Southern Appalachia, Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenage drug user with no assets save his copper-colored hair, razor sharp wit and a talent for survival. In an unsparing, singular voice, Demon braves the systemic failure of foster care, child labor, decaying schools, addiction and broken love. Utilizing Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield as the template for America’s own horror of generational poverty and abandonment, Kingsolver’s tale carries equal measures of fury, compassion, loss and humor.

Copperhead is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Women’s Prize for Fiction.

Barbara Kingsolver is the recipient of The Orange Prize for Fiction, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, a National Humanities Award, two honorary Doctorate of Letters, a James Beard Foundation Award, and The Los Angeles Times Book Prize.  She holds a Bachelors of Science degree, a Masters in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and her writing focuses on social justice, biodiversity and the interaction between humans and their environments. She is also the founder of the PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction which guarantees major publication and a cash prize of $25,000, fully funded by Kingsolver.  Her goal was to create a literary prize to "encourage writers, publishers, and readers to consider how fiction engages visions of social change and human justice".

The only way to have an author event with Barbara Kingsolver in 2024 is for Brazos to sell the most hardcover copies of Demon Copperhead from September 1-30.  Let's do it, Houston!
