Meet Mary, Publicity/Marketing Manager

As Brazos’s publicity and marketing manager, I’m always looking for creative ways to ensure that Brazos remains an integral part of the Houston arts community, be it through book signings, partnerships, school book fairs, or special events. It has become my passion to make Brazos a place that can cater to and support the needs and talents of this vibrant, diverse metropolis.

My reading habits are frenetic and unaccountable, like the best of puppies, but if pressed I'll say that I gravitate towards memoir, essays, and either literary or humorous fiction. I also often binge on young adult and children’s literature for a change of pace. This year, along with my co-worker and dear friend Mark Haber, I am focusing on reading and reviewing literature in translation.

You can follow me @schmary on Twitter.

Meet Keaton, Book Buyer

Let me tell you the story of how I fell in love with books…

One of my earliest memories is staring up at my parents’ floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and wondering how long it would take me to read everything they held. It was a mountain made of paper to my young eyes and mind. When my mom wasn’t looking, I’d expressly disobey her, scaling the couch and bringing down as many volumes as I could get my greedy little hands on. Even though I didn’t comprehend even half of what I flipped through, I’d pore over those pages for hours, basking in the scent of ink and paper and the seemingly secret knowledge contained within the words. The only thing I knew for sure at the time was that books were important, powerful, even dangerous--sentiments I still hold among the highest truths I’ve ever learned. It’s strange to think now, so many years later, exactly how profound this early experience was for me. As a writer, a student of literature and a bookseller, I can retrace the entire course of my life back to those first days when I laid sprawled across our living room floor surrounded by towers of books.

The other driving force behind my love of books was my late grandmother. A first generation Greek American, my Yia Yia’s family immigrated from Lesbos in the early twentieth century. Throughout my childhood, she constantly regaled me with dramatic recounts of the Greek myths--THE ODYSSEY and the LABORS OF HERACLES were (and still are) my favorites. As I got older, the myths stayed with me and more than anything sparked my interest in literary studies. I knew they were just stories, but what truly intrigued me was knowing those stories served to shape an entire civilization’s understanding of the world. In essence, for the ancient Greeks (and for many others as well), stories made the world. The power of that realization has never left me.

Now, here at Brazos, I strive everyday to share this love with every one of you--our valued customers and friends. As buyer, I intend to approach the curation of this vaunted bookstore with the utmost respect for you and the great history of literary Houston. What Karl Kilian created forty years ago when he opened Brazos has made our community richer and more coherent. It is a pleasure and an honor to be part of the team guiding this literary adventure into the next forty years and beyond. I promise to do my best to bring you the very best that the printed word has to offer. Whether fiction or nonfiction, it is our duty to help you find that next great book that just might change your life. Thank you all for joining us on this journey. We’re glad to have you. Take care and happy reading!

Meet Jeremy, General Manager

Jeremy Ellis has worked in independent bookstores across Texas since 1994. He began as a bookseller for the sprawling Dallas independent, Taylors Books, before moving to the much smaller community focused, Trudy’s Fireside Books in Tyler, Texas. He went on to become Event Coordinator and then Marketing Director for BookPeople in Austin. More recently, he worked in Dallas at Legacy Books and a Real Bookstore, developing new store programs, web initiatives, and marketing materials. He took over leadership at Houston’s famed Brazos Bookstore in September of 2011.

Meet Augusta, Inventory Manager

I prefer to read literary fiction that has a story that I can get lost in.  I also enjoy reading books on neuroscience and the workings of the brain.  I gravitate towards books with good design and bright color -- I do judge a book by its cover.  When I get in a fiction rut, I like to read creative nonfiction that can transport me to another world.

Our Story

In 1974, Karl Kilian opened Brazos Bookstore to encourage the growth and development of the emerging Houston literary scene with a clear focus on personalized service, community engagement and passionate curation. Larry McMurtry, Edward Albee, and Donald Barthelme were all regular customers during their times in Houston. To this day, you can shop alongside local literary heavyweights searching for their next favorite book.

As a hub for the most creative, intelligent and engaged readers in Houston, we offer programs and curate our shelves to inspire and expand the horizons of our curious readers. We aim to connect all readers with the best contemporary and classic literature, non-fiction, art and architecture monographs, and books for children. Readers engage with emerging and established authors in person through our interactive–and free–book signing events.

Brazos Bookstore supports writers and readers through long partnerships with Inprint!, the University of Houston Creative Writing Program, the Academy of American Poets, and the Annual Poet and Writer’s Ball. We additionally collaborate with many of Houston’s premier cultural organizations, including the American Institute of Architects, Rice University and the Baker Institute, the Houston Public Library, and the Asia Society, to produce and promote their literary events.

Brazos Bookstore continues to be locally owned by a group of twenty-seven Houstonians who came together and purchased the bookstore when Kilian announced his retirement in 2006. Today, the shop is managed by Jeremy Ellis. You can read about the rest of our staff here.

We are committed to providing a level of service and expertise that is second to none. Let us know how we can serve you.
