The Spinning Heart (Donal Ryan)

Article by keaton

This book is easily my most anticipated release of the new year. A deceptively slender novel, THE SPINNING HEART provides an engrossing depiction of rural life in contemporary Ireland during the nation’s recent economic bust. In one small town, as money and jobs dry up, long-buried resentments re-emerge and threaten to erupt in violence. Each of the twenty-one chapters of this novel is narrated by one of the town’s residents, which brings the individual characters to life while allowing their differing perspectives to provide the details of a larger story in which they all play a part. Reminiscent of Faulkner while remaining accessible, dramatic and deeply moving, this is a book you won’t want to miss. -Keaton
