Hold the Dark (William Giraldi)

Article by keaton

Homo Homini Lupus. Giraldi’s second novel is no less than an Arctic voyage to the very edge of civilization and the darkest corners of humanity. As ravenous wolves descend on a remote Alaskan village and children begin to disappear, a conservationist arrives to help how he can but also to exorcise his own personal demons. However, it soon becomes apparent that the greatest horrors arise from the beast within man. Hold the Dark is a relentless psychological thriller with strong gothic overtones and a highly symbolic McCarthy-esque sense of place that will have you seeing your breath when you’re not holding it. Easily one of my favorite books of the year.
