The cover design of Xiaolu Guo's new novel is quite striking. A woman faces a snowy forest with deer horms strapped to her back. The title, I AM CHINA in boldface across the sky. This image runs counter to my imagining of China. The old ideas of China are fading while on the other side of the world a modern industrial revolution is transforming the lives of 1 billion+ people.
