When Suki Kim seizes the opportunity to travel to North Korea with a group of evangelical Christian missionaries (despite not being one herself), she has no idea how hard her next six months will be. Kim works teaching English to the sons of North Korea’s elite, and instantly becomes one of the country’s most-monitored and carefully-minded foreign visitors. Though Kim grows close to her students, it’s impossible to escape the government’s guard on her daily life. Everything she teaches must be approved; she has to constantly watch what she says, while her emails are monitored; even her students lie constantly for no reason, about something as small as a classmate’s absence. Kim’s memoir is a deeply interesting look at life under the watchful eye of the North Korean regime.

When asked what Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s latest novel, AMERICANAH, is about, it’s difficult to give a succinct answer.  What really drew me to this beautifully told tale were the themes woven through the narrative --  race, coming of age, immigration, and romance.  I think almost anyone would be able to find something that speaks to them in this story.  Despite clocking in at almost 500 pages, this book is a page turner that’s easy to breeze through.  This is a great book to take on a long plane flight to your summer destination or to spend lazy days by the pool reading.

David MacLean comes to in India. He doesn’t know who he is. He doesn’t know where he is or how he got there. This is the launching point of MacLean’s harrowing memoir, THE ANSWER TO THE RIDDLE IS ME. Told in sparse, beautiful prose, MacLean recounts how he reclaimed his life after having his memory decimated by Larium, an antimalarial, and the inextricable link between identity and memory. MacLean’s story is terrifying and something that will stick with you for months.

As a huge fan of Donna Tartt’s THE SECRET HISTORY, I couldn’t wait to pick up her latest novel, THE GOLDFINCH. And I wasn’t disappointed. In the first pages of this brilliant coming-of-age novel, Theo Decker’s mother dies in a terrorist attack on the Met. In the aftermath of the explosion, Theo steals a rare painting of a goldfinch by a little-known 17th century Dutch painter, an act that sets him on an inexorable course toward an adult life of art crime. I was completely transported into the life Theo manages to scrape together after the center of his world disappears. Tartt’s vivid imagery, quirky characters, and surprising plot twists reminded me of of the work of Dickens. Despite the fact that this novel boasts almost 800 pages, I zipped through it in just four days.

Set in the 19th century in the wild and unruly terrain surrounding modern-day Houston, this historical novel follows the lives of a rebellious prostitute-turned-teacher and a morally-upright policeman as they unite in their quest to bring an elusive and dangerous murderer named McGill to justice. This engaging adventure story is full of unexpected twists and turns that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Kent’s evocation of 19th century South Texas alone is worth the price of admission.

Set during the Gilded Age, TOPSY is an historical exploration of the collision of two seemingly disparate cultural phenomena: the advent of electricity and the abuse of circus elephants. Daly illuminates the sordid history of the circus as well as the tense competition between Edison and Westinghouse over electrical power and shows how both culminated in the famous electrocution of Topsy the elephant. An engrossing, revelatory story about a little-known chapter in American history.

Interested in reading a fictionalized perspective of Chechnya after recent events in Boston? In Anthony Marra's debut novel, A CONSTELLATION OF VITAL PHENOMENA, 8-year-old Havaa's father is abducted by Russian soldiers and her house is burned to the ground. A neighbor rescues her and delivers her to the only remaining doctor in town for safekeeping.
