Inprint Brown Reading Series: Carlos Fuentes

Oct 11 2010 7:30 pm

Carlos Fuentes, born in Panama City in 1928 and educated in Mexico, the US, Geneva and various cities in South America, is Mexico's leading novelist. The Years with Laura Díaz was published to great acclaim in 2001 and was shortlisted for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. He cites many Latin American writers as influences, as well as Cervantes, Faulkner and Balzac, and though he decided to be a writer at the age of twenty-one, it was another nine years before he produced his first novel, Where the Air Is Clear (1958). He was editor of the Revista Mexicana de Literatura between 1954 and 1958, Mexican ambassador to France 1974-77, Simón Bolívar professor at the University of Cambridge in 1986, and Robert Kennedy Professor at Harvard in 1987. Carlos Fuentes achieved international prominence as a writer during the 'Boom' in Latin American literature in the 1960s, along with Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa.

Fuentes has received many awards for his accomplishments, among them the Mexian national award for literature in 1984, the Cervantes Prize in 1987, and Légion d'Honneur in 1992. The author of more than twenty books, he divides his time between Mexico City and London, and teaches for a few weeks a year at Brown University, Rhode Island.
