However, they all share the same message: Make magic Do good. Be who you are. Be what you should.

It feels like Jack Prelutsky has a hand in everything related to children’s poetry these days - and we don’t mind one bit! Mr. Prelutsky has written over 50 kid’s poetry collections, but I’VE LOST MY HIPPOPOTAMUS is one of our favorites. You simply can’t find poems about furry wiguanas and yummy pelicanteloupes anywhere else! If you love “I’ve Lost My Hippopotamus,” you should also check out THE NEW KID ON THE BLOCK, A PIZZA THE SIZE OF THE SUN, STARDINES SWIM HIGH ACROSS THE SKY, and another favorite of ours, NIGHTMARES: POEMS TO TROUBLE YOUR SLEEP.

The Owl and the Pussycat: And Other Nonsense Cover Image
By Edward Lear, Robert Ingpen (Illustrator)
$14.99
ISBN: 9780957148307
Availability: Backordered
Published: Palazzo Editions - September 1st, 2012

First written in 1867 as a get-well treat for the daughter of a family friend, THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT is now a staple in the children’s poetry canon. This printing of the poem, alongside Lear’s other wonderful, nonsensical pieces such as “The Jumbies” and “The Dong with the Luminous Nose” celebrates the 200th anniversary of Lear’s birthday. Robert Ingpen’s sweeping illustrations seal this little book as a must-have for any sophisticated child’s library.

Availability: Not On Our Shelves. Usually arrives in 1-5 Days
Published: Candlewick Press (MA) - August 28th, 2012

“What if a piece of toast turned into a piece of ghost?” or even worse, “What if hard-boiled eggs turned into hard-boiled legs?” It is such pressing questions as these that tumble through the pages of Michael Rosen’s latest book of poems. Illustrator Quentin Blake provides drawings for each of Rosen’s off-the-wall verses. A scrumptious read.

No children’s poetry list would be complete without Shel Silverstein. I encourage you to read everything he wrote, but I chose to highlight WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS because HarperCollins has recently released a 30th anniversary special edition that includes twelve new poems.

From Silverpoint To Silver Screen: Andy Warhol’s 1950s Drawings (Daniel Blau)

This batch of sketches was purchased from the Warhol estate in 2011 by German art collector Daniel Blau. This is the first time they have been published. The drawings were created before Warhol developed his Pop Art style and give an interesting insight into the development of his later work. I had a reaction similar to that of James Hofmaier, who, in one of the book’s essays, remarks, “I have never considered Warhol poetic and now I find myself compelled to think anew my opinion of the person who was Andrew (“Andy”) Warhol(a).”

Opportunity, Montana (Brad Tyer)

Tyer, a Texas reporter who relocated to Montana in search of the unspoiled West, exposes the cost of greed and carelessness in a state that many Americans consider to be the last great frontier. His exposé focuses on the Clark Fork River, which for nearly a century was a dumping ground for industrial waste. Now, well-meaning environmentalists and investors are attempting to restore the river to its original state, but are perhaps doing more harm than good in their efforts. A passionate and complex look at Western environmental concerns.

We’ve all wanted to escape our hometowns before, but perhaps none of us as much as Josie Moraine. Josie lives and works in a bookstore in the French Quarter in the 1950s, which wouldn’t be so bad if she wasn’t known amongst the locals as the daughter of a prostitute. Just when Josie thinks she may have finally finagled her way into Smith, the Northeastern college of her dreams, the murder of a wealthy tourist in the Quarter threatens to destroy everything Josie knows and loves. Part murder mystery, part portrait of segregated New Orleans and part coming of age story, OUT OF THE EASY is a new Brazos Bookstore favorite.

Rowell’s novel is the story of tween love with a welcome twist. Eleanor, a poor, quirky redhead with an abusive step-father, is the new kid in town. Park is a Korean-American boy whose “cool” status hangs perpetually by a thread. Their lives are thrown together when Park reluctantly gives Eleanor a seat beside him on the bus and slowly, very slowly, a love for comics, then music, and then each other emerges. Earnestly and honestly told, ELEANOR & PARK will having you wishing - despite yourself - that you could go back and experience first love all over again. If you don't believe me, check out John Green's glowing NYT review!

For those of you on the lookout for the next big thing in young adult fiction, Rick Yancey’s post-apocalyptic novel THE FIFTH WAVE is it. Edvard Munch: The Modern Eye (Nicolas Cullinan)

Munch is best known for his iconic painting The Scream. However, his other paintings - as well as his prints and photographs - convey a similar intensity and are well worth a look. Munch often created many versions of the same composition. When seen collectively here, these multiples seem darker, more urgent, and more personal. Perhaps most unsettling are his depictions of the halo shape that he saw in later life as a result of a hemorrhage in his eye. The intensity and honesty of Munch’s body of work served to document the human condition in a unique and undeniably influential way.

Understanding North Korea

North Korea has been all over the news lately due to Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un’s renewed threats of military action against the United States. Because North Korea is so carefully controlled from within, it has been historically difficult for authors of both fiction and nonfiction to write about it. However, more and more interest in this secret world has spurred writers from all fields to imagine the North Korean experience from the point of view of its silenced citizens. Here are some of our favorite perspectives on this mysterious nation. -Danielle

Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea Cover Image
$17.00
ISBN: 9780385523912
Availability: Not On Our Shelves. Usually arrives in 1-5 Days
Published: Spiegel & Grau - September 21st, 2010

Demick’s intimate portrayal of six ordinary North Korean citizens is visceral and haunting. This book serves as a vivid reminder of how a repressive government can exert control over every aspect of its citizens’ lives. Demick followed her subjects for fifteen years, through Kim Jong-il’s ascent to power and a famine that decimated the population. A gripping, masterful, and beautifully crafted piece of nonfiction.

Escape from Camp 14: One Man's Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West Cover Image
$16.00
ISBN: 9780143122913
Availability: Not On Our Shelves. Usually arrives in 1-5 Days
Published: Penguin Books - March 26th, 2013

In our era of Google Maps, no country can hide all of its secrets. Although the prison camps that North Korean elites use to punish and kill undesirables are clearly visible from any personal computer with an internet connection, few people have lived to tell the world about the horrors found within. Shin Dong-hyuk is one of those very few people, and his story, told here in spare and unflinching prose by Blaine Harden, is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Adam Johnson is one of the few Americans who has been to North Korea, although his trip was of course very carefully orchestrated by the government handlers in charge of his stay. Still, Johnson’s firsthand knowledge of the country came in handy in the creation of this masterful novel, which was one of my personal favorites of 2012. Pak Jun Do, Johnson’s hero, rises from humble origins to the upper ranks of the North Korean state and then is imprisoned for fighting for the woman he loves. A thought-provoking page turner!

Architectural and Cultural Guide: Pyongyang Cover Image

Published: Dom Publishers - February 28th, 2012

A beautiful slipcased two-volume set that presents the reader with a panoramic overview of North Korea’s capital city. The first volume of this set presents buildings, streets, and squares with no commentary provided, while the second volume places these architectural wonders in their proper cultural context. The eerily empty streets of Pyongyang are odd, beautiful, and haunting. The careful study of propaganda posters alone is worth the price of admission.

Five Myths about Nuclear Weapons Cover Image
$22.00
ISBN: 9780547857879

Published: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) - January 15th, 2013

Wilson’s passionate plea for disarmament is based around his refutation of five crucial tenets that undergird the popular argument for nuclear proliferation. Although this book is not specifically about North Korea, Kim Jong-un’s threat of nuclear attack makes this book topical and timely, especially for a post-Cold War generation unfamiliar with the intricacies of nuclear policy.

Gods in Print (Richard H. David et al)

Each print in this book is a miniature world of its own, one that perfectly displays every detail of the story it tells. The action is often a strange mixture of serenity and intensity. I enjoyed reading about the mythological narratives while admiring the panache of the visual interpretations. Spanning 100 years from 1870 to 1970, this collection offers a unique perspective of the evolution of the imagery in the prints and a history of their publishers. -Sam
