When this novel came out last November, it garnered all kinds of comparisons to THE GREAT GATSBY. However, that comparison does not do justice to the originality of this work. Protagonist and narrator David “Lizard” Hochmeyer is one of the more memorable characters to come out of recent fiction, and, when his parents are murdered in front of him, it sets off a chain of events somehow involving the mysterious ballerina who lives across the lake from him. This is a story about obsession, revenge, family, and cooking. Spanning decades and overflowing with a cast of peculiar characters, LIFE AMONG GIANTS is not quite like anything else on this list. If you loved THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP, check this one out!   --Keaton

Roorbach has given readers a totally unique family saga that is infused with love, sex, and murder. This is the kind of story that takes you on a journey from the very first page and races right along to the unforgettable conclusion. I was drawn in by the characters, both sympathetic and despicable. This is a great book to recommend to everyone. -- Barbara Kelly, Portland Bookstore, University of Southern Maine, Portland, ME
