Nautical Tales for Young Adventurers

Article by liz

I can begin this column in no other way than with my favorite bad joke: “What’s a pirate’s favorite letter?” This is the part where you all yell back, “R!”--or a piratical “ARRRRR.”

But no, matey: it be the C.

One of my true loves is the C--er, the sea, as well. So imagine my delight with the current trend of nautically-themed middle grade adventures! We’ve got all kinds of books about setting sail to new waters, pirate adventures, and journeys of discovery on the open sea.

HOOK'S REVENGE is everything I never knew I wanted from a Peter Pan sequel--namely, that Captain Hook's long-lost daughter receives a letter from her deceased father, asking her to go forth and avenge him. She does. It's great. And we have the sequel, just out Tuesday: THE PIRATE CODE!

CAST OFF isn't based on a true story, but it might as well be for how carefully researched and richly written it is. Twelve year-old Petra stows away aboard a Dutch merchantman in 1663, and must convince Bram, the son of the ship's carpenter, to help her hide. Pirates, illness, tough choices: it's great historical fiction. For any fans of THE TRUE CONFESSIONS OF CHARLOTTE DOYLE, here's a spiritual successor.

Lit-savvy parents will recognize the characteristic quality of publisher McSweeney's in this absolutely stunning novel of found families and unlooked-for adventure. Students from a last-chance school for troubled kids field trip out to the bay to visit a formerly-sunken privateer, when a storm catches them--and suddenly San Francisco is nothing more than a smoky glow on the horizon. The book isn't just beautiful on the outside--the inside is full of gorgeous illustrations, too.

If you love Jim Henson or Lemony Snicket, this one's for you. Approved by the readers of our Acorn Reading Social, this piratical adventure is a romp through hilarious high seas. Plus, it features as a great warning against kids performing THE DEED (picking one's nose, then eating it): it'll get you kidnapped by pirates. And I hear those guys smell.

Pick up any one of these seafaring stories in our kids room--it's never too late to find your sea legs!
