Article by Jeremy

May 2 is the first ever national Independent Bookstore Day, so come celebrate with us! As the Houston summertime arrives, we have a sweltering lineup, full of refreshments and literary luminaries. And come pick up some limited edition swag, including signed chapbooks from Roxane Gay, infographics from David McCandless, amazing limited edition prints from Chris Ware and more! These limited edition items will only be available in-store on May 2. Here’s the full schedule of events:

10:30am: A special edition of story time, with treats (provided by Dixie’s Dessert Delivery) and crafts! Also, make a bookmark in-store for a last chance to enter our contest, which will close at 8pm that evening.

12:00-1:00pm: Join us for lunchtime refreshments and drinks to unveil the Brazos Book Nook, a brand new artisanal chair designed by New Living

2:00-3:00pm: A drunk coloring party! Starring our brand new coloring book, Hemingwasted: A Loving Look at Literary Lushes, which features drawings of great authors paired with witty quotes on the subject of alcohol! We’ll have wine from Beviamo and Saint Arnold beer on hand.

5:00-6:00pm: We’ll debut new Shakespeare-influenced art on our windows! Come meet artist Sara Hinkle at a wine and cheese reception.

6:30pm: Houston’s Ultimate Literary Showdown! Four authors will write short pieces on the spot. They will then read their work before a panel of judges. We will make a $300 donation to a charity of the winner’s choosing.

The authors are:
*Chris Cander (WHISPER HOLLOW), playing for Books Between Kids
*Mike Freedman (SCHOOL BOARD), playing for the Rice Veterans in Business Association
